Report: Audi dropping manual transmission from European S4 & S5 lineup

. Tuesday, November 8, 2011

According to a recent report by Fourtitude, Audi will discontinue manual transmissions in two of their most popular enthusiast-driven models; the S4 and S5 (starting with next model year's facelifted range). While our hearts immediately skipped a beat after reading the headline, we were happy to read on that despite this move by Audi AG, American enthusiasts will still be able to enjoy a proper gearbox as Audi of America will retain the 6-speed manual option for both cars.

In all honesty, we understand where Audi is coming from in making this decision. Granted, we love rowing our own gears (all quattroholic.com staff cars have manual transmissions) but the advancements in technology have given "automatic" transmissions such as Audi's S-tronic box a clear advantage in every aspect of driving. Though the numbers may say one thing, most quattroholic's would agree that three pedals equals a much more enjoyable driving experience.

First we get a more powerful TT RS and now this?! It seems Audi is finally recognizing America's strong contingent of enthusiast drivers.
