Audi R8 GT wrecks on Autobahn, bursts into flames

. Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Reports are coming from Germany of what may be the first Audi R8 GT accident. Traveling at a high rate of speed, the R8 GT reportedly lost control on a "damp" section of Germany's A9 Autobahn near Denkendorf. It's said the car struck the median and right barrier several times before coming to rest and ultimately bursting into flames. Luckily the driver escaped the car prior to combustion and is reported to be nearly unscathed.

There's no official report of the exact origin of the car or driver. However, as the R8 GT has yet to go on sale (or rather, be delivered), we imagine the car was either part of Audi's factory fleet and/or owned by an employee. Not to mention the close proximity of this stretch of Autobahn and Audi's headquarters in Ingolstadt.

In addition to the attached photo, there is a short video clip of the wreckage (in German) which can be viewed here.
