Audi at the 2010 New York International Auto Show

. Wednesday, March 31, 2010

As we mentioned on Facebook and Twitter, Audi did not present any new models at the 2010 New York International Auto Show. So, there's really nothing new to report from the event. That said, there was still plenty of eye candy to behold at the Audi booth.

Overall, I was really impressed with the hospitality at the Audi booth. Audi's PR team really went out of their way to take time and speak with me, answer questions and become more familiar with quattroholic.com as a whole. Considering this was the first auto show quattroholic.com has attended, I felt right at home.

Bonus: As I was leaving the show, I noticed this unsuspecting Euro-spec 2011 A8 waiting in front of the Javits Center. Doesn't the new A8 look great in black?

Gulf Livery TT, Ipanema Brown R8 Spyder, TT RS & more at Audi HQ in Ingolstadt

. Tuesday, March 30, 2010

My good buddy Jeff was lucky enough to visit Audi's headquarters in Ingolstadt today. While at Audi HQ, he got the rare opportunity to drive an Audi TT RS on the Autobahn (165 mph) and managed to snap a few photos for us of the cars parked outside the famed A50 building. Check out the photos after the jump.

You may have seen the Gulf livery Audi TT parked here before. The car belongs to über-gearhead, Audi board member Michael Dick who is known for his tremendously great taste in automobiles. As for the other cars; there's an Ipanema Brown R8 Spyder, red RS6 Avant (plus?) and a black S6 Avant with optional black optics package and IN-RS license plates that has us curious. Also, inside the Audi Forum Ingolstadt was a TT RS in Ibis White with black optics package and carbon side mirrors.

All in all, I wish I was there. A big thanks goes out to Jeff for the photos!

Audi RS5 spotted on the streets of Salzburg

.

It's safe to say that the Audi RS5 was one of, if not the most anticipated Audi model reveal of the year. We've seen the press photos, shots from the Geneva Motor Show and even video footage of the RS5 on the track and street. Now, photos coming in from a reader at RS6.com shows the Audi RS5 caught parked on the streets of Salzburg, Austria.

There's really nothing like seeing a brand new car in the wild. With less than perfect lighting and non-professional photography, shots like these allow us to see what a car really looks like. So, now seeing the RS5 on the street, what's your consensus? Let us know by commenting below.

Audi celebrates 30 years of quattro at the Techno Classica in Essen

.

The European classic car season kicks off when nearly 150,000 fans, collectors and restorers gather in Essen for the annual Techno Classica. It's only fitting that Audi choose this event to celebrate 30 years of quattro and present the quattro success story. Full press release and a special video after the jump.

Audi celebrates 30 years of quattro at the Techno Classica

- Major classic car show from April 7 to 11, 2010

- Contemporary witnesses of “30 years of quattro” on the Audi stand in Hall 7

- Audi V8 quattro DTM 1990 is limited-edition Audi Tradition model of the year

Four rings, seven letters, 30 years: Audi is presenting its quattro success story at the 22nd Techno Classica in Essen. 30 years ago, the “Ur-quattro” (original quattro) launched a legend which signalled the start of Audi’s winning streak in motorsport and on ordinary roads that continues to this very day. Over 3.3 million cars with permanent four-wheel drive have left the Audi production lines since 1980. Today, every third new Audi is fitted with quattro drive.

Every year, around 150,000 fans, collectors and restorers make their way to the international classic car show in Essen at the start of the classic car season. This year Audi has dedicated itself entirely to its quattro history and is presenting four contemporary witnesses of a legendary era in Hall 7: the “Ur-quattro”, V8 quattro, S2 Coupé and RS2 Avant. In addition, fans can purchase the traditional miniature car once again this year, and the Audi Club International (ACI) is showing further sporty originals from Audi’s history.

The miniature – the Audi Tradition model of the year – is a 1:43-scale Audi V8 quattro DTM from 1990, limited to 333 units and in the colour orange. The original model is, of course, also on display: 20 years ago Audi had its first outing in the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) with the Audi V8 quattro. The spectators initially thought this car was anything other than sporty. But the “chauffeur saloon” fought through brilliantly against the tough competition: In the last race of the 1990 season, Hans-Joachim Stuck clinched the DTM championship title for Audi at the Hockenheimring.

The “Ur-quattro” is of course a must at such an event: At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1980, Audi astonished the automotive world by presenting a four-wheel-drive coupé, the Audi quattro, which would go on to write a whole new chapter in motoring history. The idea of a sports car with four-wheel drive had come into being in early 1977 during winter testing in Finland. Here, the Iltis, an off-road vehicle with four-wheel drive developed by Audi, demonstrated surprisingly impressive handling characteristics in ice and snow. The Audi quattro with its outstanding traction achieved completely new dimensions in handling stability, as demonstrated in spectacular fashion by its international rally successes from 1981 onwards.

Its successor was the Audi S2 Coupé, which is also on show in Essen. This car is powered by the same 2.2-litre 20-valve five-cylinder turbocharged engine which had given the final version of the “Ur-quattro” and the Audi 200 quattro 20V their dynamic thrust.

The fourth car on the Audi stand is an Audi RS2 Avant which was built from 1993 to 1995 and was the first model in the famous Audi RS series. This Avant, which transferred 315 bhp to the road, combined everyday suitability and sports performance like no other model before it.

And, last but not least, the Audi Club International (ACI) is presenting around 20 sporty exhibits from the four ACI divisions Auto Union, NSU, Audi Classic and Audi Lifestyle. These include a motorsport version of the DKW F12, an NSU TT, an Audi quattro from 1980 and an Audi 200 quattro in rally trim. The ACI is the umbrella organisation for the Audi clubs and the clubs of the predecessor brands of the present-day AUDI AG.

Video: How Top Gear rendered their Audi S1

.

In order to quell the masses before a highly anticipated vehicle is made public, many automotive news outlets hire folks to render or manipulate an image to show what a car may look like. As this video shows, Top Gear has now jumped on the Audi S1 rendering bandwagon. Only this time, they went the extra mile to actually show readers how such a rendering is born. Check out the time-lapse video below of the painstaking process of photoshopping an Audi A1 into a leaner, meaner, S version.

. Friday, March 26, 2010

In the world of drop-top supercars, the Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI faces some pretty stiff competition. So what happens when you throw the R8 Spyder - whose pedigree boasts a lineage predominantly made up of sports sedans - into the mix? We'll allow evo's Chris Harris to demonstrate.

Senner Tuning's Audi S5 "White Beast"

.

Senner Tuning has revealed their newly tuned Audi S5 today. Named "White Beast," the latest Senner Audi S5 features various aerodynamic improvements, a bump in horsepower and torque, suspension and wheel upgrades and curiously cool "Hot Wheels" decals. Full details and photo gallery after the jump.

The "White Beast" features a host of aerodynamic upgrades, most notably the larger RS5 style front air inlets, splitter and grille. In addition to the car's facial cosmetic pleasantries, Senner also adds a rear spoiler and Rieger Carbon-Look rear apron to round out the aesthetic improvements.

Under the hood, the new Senner S5's 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 boasts a fairly noticeable bump in horsepower from a stock 349 bhp to a more impressive 378 bhp. Torque also gets a nudge to 350 lb/ft. The power and torque boost comes thanks to a performance air filter, "plug-in package" and performance exhaust system. To top off the car's performance upgrades, Senner has raised the S5's speed limitation from 255 km/h to 285 km/h (177 mph).

The "White Beast's" suspension is lowered 40mm at the front and 35mm at the rear. Featuring custom 9 x 21" (front) and 10.5 x 21" (rear) Work Varianza T1S, polished light alloy, diamond black wheels wrapped in Hankook S1 Evo rubber. More details can be found in the press release following the photo gallery.

Now, time for the eye-candy.

Press Release:

White beast - by Senner Tuning AG

The German art of tuning: a worthy example is the new S5 that had taken the form of a truly individual "sports car" in the hands of Senner Tuning AG tuners from Ingelheim. Apart from the decent design kit, Senner Tuning still has various upgrades ready to apply on the S5 series.

A front spoiler, stretched deeply below, with a large air inlet in RS5 Look with a well-suited radiator grill, designed in the form of cells, contributes to the perfect car body along the sliding air streams and optics. Additionally, we can find a rear spoiler lip at the body, as well as a rear apron unit performed in Carbon Look by Rieger tuning house. To make the appearance complete, the car is equipped with modern LED back lights, and a number-plate light has light-emitting diodes in clear white, too.

But this is still not enough. As the name "white beast" implies, not only the optics but also the engine power have been upgraded. With parametric surface optimization, performance air filter plug-in package and exhaust system, additional 30 ph and 35 Nm are now available for Audi S5, and the overall power now makes 384 ph and 475 Nm.

Furthermore, the speed limitation of 250 km/h was raised, so now the car can reach the full 285 km/h. The acceleration up to this speed was boosted by the Power Converter, an electronic module of acceleration of the signal from the gas pedal.

The corresponding sound of the newly acquired power is produced by the Senner Tuning exhaust system which emphasizes the car's sport-style appearance optically, too, with its four exhaust pipes of high-grade steel. The exhaust system includes a sport exhaust silencer and an X-pipe and is provided with an EU grant for vehicle operating.

To make the performance of the reinforced motor core optimal for the street and allow no losses, the craftsmen from Senner Tuning use lowered suspension springs with 40-mm suspension at the front axle and 35-mm suspension at the rear axle which also create a nice-looking aspect between the body and the rims.

In addition, giant and two-parted 21-inch polished light alloy wheel rims Work Varianza T1S in diamond black, that were produced exclusively for Senner Tuning, find their application with the white beast. High-performance tyres by Hankook with an S1 Evo label, as big as 255/30 R21 and 295/25 R21, were installed on 9x21" and 10,5x21" rims. And there is no need to adjust the wheel arch edges!

The interior has also undergone some changes. A carbon fiber interior package, including the tachometer display screen, sticks out from the rest. There is also a fancy foot mat of high-quality velour - this is where sport ambitions merge with individuality.

The cost of the whole renovation kit is 18,990 Euro including technical inspection fees!
